What is a Featured Snippet?

Featured snippets are selected search results that are displayed on top of Google's organic results below the ads in a box.

A Featured Snippet is a summary of an answer to a user's query, which is extracted from a webpage, and includes the page's title and URL. They are the first thing a user sees when searching for a word or phrase.

This featured block includes a link to the page, the page title and URL. Google programmatically detects pages that answer the user’s question in the most clear, concise and accurate way, and displays the top result. Featured Snippets aim at answering the user's question right away (hence their other well-known name, "answer boxes").

Obtaining a Featured Snippet is better than position 1 on Google's search results. A Featured Snippet for your website is Google telling the internet you are the authority on this chosen topic.

Featured Snippets are also used for the answer on voice searches.

Featured snippets may be a way of Google is demonstrating to us, the content producer, how to write and structure our content. We can use Featured Snippets as a reference for how good content is produced - because Google has lots of analysed data to help them identify what is good, and what is not.

If you earn a Featured Snippet expect your traffic to increase, even if you already have the top search position. Unfortunately, Google does not keep the same answer in the Featured Snippet over time, they rotate. You are more likely to keep your Featured Snippet if your website bounce rate is low, and your site is well optimised.
